LinkedIn for job seekers: profile, Open to Work and outreach
LinkedIn helps a job search in two ways: recruiters find you in search when your headline and skills name the role you want, and you reach the people who decide before a role is posted anywhere else. Both work only when your profile tells the same story as your resume.
A profile recruiters find
Recruiters search LinkedIn by title, skills and location. Make your headline the role you want plus two or three key skills, not "open to new opportunities". List the same skill names in your Skills section that appear on your resume and in the postings you apply to.
Open to Work: public or recruiters only
Open to Work comes in two versions: the green photo frame everyone sees, and a signal only recruiters see. If you are employed, use the second. Fill in specific titles and locations, because recruiters filter on them.
Job search filters and Easy Apply
Filter by date posted, workplace type and seniority, then save the search as an alert. Easy Apply is fast but lands in the same queue as hundreds of others: for jobs you care about, tailor your resume and message someone on the team.
Networking and messages to hiring managers
A short message to the person running the search beats a generic connection request. Say which role you applied for, give one specific reason you fit, and ask one question. No attachments and no request for a job in the first line.
Frequently asked questions
Should I turn on the green Open to Work frame?
If you are not working and want your network to know, yes. If you are employed, use the recruiters-only setting.
What should my LinkedIn headline say?
The role you want and two or three key skills, named the way job postings name them. Those are the words recruiters search for.
Is Easy Apply worth it?
For jobs you match closely, yes. For the ones that matter most, tailor your resume and send a short message to someone on the team.
How do I message a hiring manager?
Three sentences: the role, one concrete reason you fit, and one question. No attachments in the first message.
