Free resume templates you can fill in today

5 free resume templates for the most common situations: experienced professional, entry-level, career change, tech and student internship. Download each one as a Word (DOCX) or PDF file, or copy the text straight from the page, with no sign-up and no email required. Every template is one page, one column and plain text, so applicant tracking systems (ATS) can read it, and none asks for a photo, your age or other personal details that English-language employers do not expect.

How to fill in a resume template

  1. Pick the template for your situation, not the one that looks best. The order of the sections is what changes: experience first when you have it, education and projects first when you do not.
  2. Replace every [placeholder]. Delete any section you cannot fill honestly rather than leaving it thin.
  3. Write bullets as results. Verb, what you did, and a number: “Reduced invoice errors by 40% by automating three manual checks”.
  4. Mirror the job posting. Use the exact names of the skills and tools it lists, so a recruiter searching the ATS finds you.
  5. Export to PDF unless the posting asks for Word, and check the file opens with the text selectable.

What English-language resumes leave out

Employers in the UK, Ireland, the US and most international companies judge applications on skills and experience only, and many screen out resumes that include information they are not allowed to consider. Leave out:

  • a photo, your date of birth or age
  • marital status, children, religion or nationality (state your right to work instead, if relevant)
  • your full home address: city and country are enough
  • “References available on request”: it is assumed

Reverse chronological order

List your most recent job first and work backwards, with month and year for every date. It is the format recruiters and ATS parsers expect. A gap of more than a few months is better explained in one line (a course, caring for family, travel) than left for the interviewer to guess.

Resume template FAQ

Should a resume be one page or two?

One page for students, graduates and anyone with under about ten years of experience. Two pages are fine for senior roles with a long, relevant track record. Recruiters skim the first page in seconds, so the most important information belongs at the top of page one.

Should I put a photo on my resume?

Not for jobs in the UK, Ireland, the US or most international companies. Employers there avoid photos to reduce bias, and some ATS parsers handle images badly. Leave out your date of birth, marital status and nationality for the same reason. If you apply in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, a photo is still common, so follow local custom there.

What is the difference between a resume and a CV?

In the US and Canada, a resume is the one or two page summary used for job applications, and a CV is a long academic record. In the UK, Ireland and most of Europe, people call that same short document a CV. The templates on this page work for both: use whichever word the job posting uses.

How do I make my resume ATS-friendly?

Use one column, standard headings such as Work Experience, Education and Skills, and plain text instead of tables, text boxes or icons. Repeat the exact wording of key skills from the job posting, and save the file as a PDF exported from Word or Google Docs, never as a scanned image.

Do I need a different resume for every job?

You need the same base resume with a tailored summary, skills list and top bullets for each application. Ten minutes matching your wording to the posting usually makes the difference between being filtered out and reaching a recruiter.

How should I name my resume file?

Use your name and the document type, for example Jane-Smith-Resume.pdf. Recruiters download dozens of files called resume.pdf, and yours is easier to find with your name on it.
