The UK National Careers Service describes a cover letter as a short letter, usually 3 to 5 paragraphs, that introduces you and asks the employer to consider your application. It should open with who you are, which job you are applying for and where you found it, with the reference number if there is one. The middle shows the skills and experience that match what the employer is looking for, backed up with facts. The ending thanks the reader, says your CV has the details and tells them how to contact you.
Europass, the European Commission's service, adds a simple plan: first paragraph, why you want the job; second, why you are the right candidate; third, why the company is a good match for you. A letter from Apply4Me follows that structure, and you can rewrite any part of it.
They can tell a generic letter, whoever wrote it. It gives itself away with sentences that fit any company ("I am a hard-working team player"), no job title or company name, and not one concrete example from your work. Those letters come from asking a chatbot to "write a cover letter" and nothing else.
Apply4Me writes from two sources: your CV and the job ad. So the letter names your roles, projects and results and links them to the requirements of that job. The National Careers Service gives the same advice for writing by hand: write a new letter for every job, tailored to the company and the role, and match the keywords the employer used in the advert. Before you send it, read it and add one thing only you know, such as why you want to work for that company.
One page at most. Europass says a cover letter should not be longer than one page, with short, clear paragraphs, a formal tone and a simple font in size 11 or 12. In practice that means three or four paragraphs and around 250 to 400 words. The National Careers Service also suggests using the same font and size as your CV, so the two look like one application.
A letter from Apply4Me keeps to that length and to the order above. If you would rather start from a ready layout, our cover letter templates are free to copy or download without an account, and the matching resume templates use the same fonts.
The structure is the same, the conventions differ. In Germany the Bundesagentur für Arbeit says an Anschreiben belongs in almost every application and can decide between an invitation and a rejection. It puts the date at the top right, then a subject line with the job title and reference number from the ad, and it advises addressing the contact person by name rather than with the impersonal "Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren". In Poland a cover letter is often optional in online forms, but with dozens of applicants per job it is where you show that you want this offer in particular.
Apply4Me writes the letter in English, Polish or German. Polish letters use the right grammatical gender for you (zrobiłem or zrobiłam), and you can translate any letter into English, Polish or German in one click.
